No charges in Niagara Falls barricaded person call

Police say that there were reasonable grounds for the person to be apprehended under the Mental Health Act

Update

As a result of the ongoing investigation by detectives from the 2 District detective office, reasonable grounds existed for the person to be apprehended under the Mental Health Act. They were subsequently transferred to a hospital for further psychiatric assessment and care.

Investigating officers took possession of firearms and ammunition from the house.

There are no criminal charges related to this incident at this time.

Update - July 23, 8:20 p.m.

On July 23, 2022, at 12:45 p.m. 2 District Niagara Falls uniform officers responded to a house in Niagara Falls regarding a weapons call.

Officers arrived on scene and determined a firearm may be involved. A person in the house refused to exit and surrender themselves. The house was contained by officers of the NRPS Emergency Task Unit. After prolonged negotiations with NRPS Crisis Negotiators at 7:15 p.m. the person surrendered to officers and was arrested.

The investigation has been turned over to detectives from the 2 District detective office. The house is being held pending a search warrant.

Road closures in the area have been opened.

More information will be released as the investigation continues.

On July 23, 2022, at 12:45 p.m. 2 District Niagara Falls uniform officers responded to a house in Niagara Falls regarding a weapons call.

Officers arrived on scene at a home on Green Boughs Road near Olden Avenue. The initial investigation determined there was a person in the house armed with a firearm. The Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) Emergency Task Unit and Crisis Negotiators were called to the scene. The person refused to exit the home.

Officers contained the residence and closed roads in the area.

  • Green Bough Road at Kennedy Court
  • Olden Avenue at Willow Crescent

Members of the public are asked to stay out of the area.Homes in the immediate proximity of the house have been contacted by officers and asked to stay inside and shelter in place.

Negotiations are ongoing as of the time of this release.
