Niagara Regional Police have made an arrest in a bank robbery at gunpoint last month in Niagara Falls.

Police were called to the CIBC branch on Huggins Street at Portage Road at around 2 p.m. on Friday, February 16.

They were told a man went into the bank, pulled out a black handgun and demanded cash before leaving with money.

Detectives were able to quickly identify a suspect. On February 17, police issued a news release saying Stephane Smith was wanted for robbery using a firearm and uttering threats, however his whereabouts were unknown.

That changed when Smith was one of two people from Niagara arrested on Friday by Halton Regional Police in relation to an armed bank robbery in Burlington.

The 54-year-old is now facing charges of robbery with a firearm, uttering threats, possession of firearm, weapon or ammunition contrary to prohibition order and driving a motor vehicle no licence in the Niagara Falls bank robbery.

He’s also facing several charges in relation to the bank robbery in Burlington.

Smith was remanded following his bail hearing with a future court date.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
