St. Catharines man surrenders to police after nearly five-hour stand off

On Monday, May 25, 2020, 1 District (St. Catharines) uniform officers were called to an apartment complex in the area of Vine St. and Scott St., in the City of St. Catharines, following the report of a threats call.

Investigation by uniform patrol had discovered that a 40-year-old male had uttered threats toward three young persons (all under the age of 16).

On Tuesday, May 26, at approximately 11 a.m., police re-attended the apartment in order to arrest the male. The male refused to surrender to police and exit his apartment. Out of the concern for public safety, members of the Emergency Task Unit, K9 and Crisis Negotiators were called in to assist with resolving the situation.

At 2:40 p.m., officers entered the apartment and arrested 40-year-old Matthew Holden of St. Catharines in relation to the following alleged charges:         

  • Uttering Threats, s.264.1(1)(a) Criminal Code

Holden was held in custody to appear at a bail hearing via video link, on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines.
