On June 14, 2022 at approximately 5:35 a.m.,1 District St. Catharines uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service responded to a report of damage to a storefront in downtown St. Catharines.
Officers attended at a business on St. Paul Street near James Street and met with the complainant. Officers observed the glass door and a plate glass window had been shattered. Small holes in the glass were found. Damage is estimated at $2,500.
The investigating officer working with members of the NRPS Real Time Operations Centre were able to review closed circuit video footage of the downtown area. The suspect was observed riding a skateboard down St. Paul Street near James Street on June 14, 2022, at 4:49 a.m. The suspect can be seen retrieving a slingshot and a metal 'BB' and shooting the front of the business, breaking the glass.
Further review of the footage lead to the identity of the suspect.
On June 14, 2022 at approximately 10 a.m. Matthew Dean Bodo (31 years) of St. Catharines was arrested.
Officers were able to review footage from a similar damage incident on June 10, 2022. In that incident a male suspect was observed riding a skateboard on St. Paul Street near Carlisle Street when they used a sling shot to shoot the glass window of a business in that area. In that case damage was estimated at $5000.
Bodo has been charged with the criminal offence of:
- Mischief under $5,000, Sec. 430(4) CC (2 Counts)
Bodo was later released on a Form 10 with a future court date of Sept. 2, 2022, at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse at 59 Church St., St. Catharines.
