On Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020, members of the Niagara Regional Police conducted R.I.D.E. spot checks within the Cites of Port Colborne and St. Catharines.

Throughout the night, officers stopped approximately 600 vehicles and inquired if any of the drivers had consumed any alcohol or drugs earlier in the evening.  In total, 17 drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath for analysis. One driver was arrested after the sample they provided resulted in a 'fail' on the roadside screening device.

In addition to the impaired driving arrest, one driver provided a sample that resulted in an 'Alert.' They had their licence suspended for a period of seven days once it was discovered that they had a previous roadside suspension.

Several tickets were also issued to drivers for various traffic-related offences as well as one driver who received a ticket for having cannabis readily available to them.

The Niagara Regional Police Service remain committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E. Impaired driving is still the leading criminal offence causing deaths in Canada.

This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of the Solicitor General as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.
