Fatal collision in Pelham under investigation

Police say a driver lost control and veered into oncoming traffic

On Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024 at approximately 5 p.m., 3 District (Welland/Pelham) uniform officers with the Niagara Regional Police Service attended the area of Merrittville Highway and Regional Road 20, in the Town of Pelham for a serious motor vehicle collision.


Investigation revealed that a white Impala was travelling southbound on Merrittville Highway when it lost control, veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a black SUV.

The driver, a 71-year-old male, of the white Impala was transported to a hospital by Niagara Emergency Medical Services where he was tragically pronounced deceased. The 67-year-old male passenger sustained non life-threatening injuries and was transferred to an out of region hospital. 

A 21-year-old female driver of the black SUV and a minor female passenger sustained minor physical injuries.


Detectives with the Collision Reconstruction Unit have taken carriage of the investigation
