Extensive search launched after man slips into Niagara River

On Monday, June 8, 2020 at approximately 7:15 p.m., emergency personal responded to the Niagara River in area of the Niagara Glen and the Niagara River Parkway in the City of Niagara Falls in regards to a male in distress.

Uniform members for the 2 District – Niagara Falls office of the Niagara Regional Police and Niagara Parks Police responded to the area. Their investigation revealed that four males had gone for a hike and stopped to take photos on a rock. One of the males slipped off the rock causing him to fall into the Niagara River. The area of the river the male fell into is very fast flowing with a strong current.

Considerable assets were dispatched to search the area including:
    •    Niagara Regional Police Marine Unit
    •    Niagara Parks Police High Angle River Team
    •    Niagara Falls Fire Department
    •    Canadian Coast Guard
    •    Erie County Sheriff's Office - Air One
    •    US Coast Guard
    •    Canadian Forces Base Trenton - Search and Rescue (helicopter)

The 19-year-old male who resides in St. Catharines has not been located. His identity is not being released at this time.

The circumstances remain under investigation by 2 District (Niagara Falls) detectives. Foul play is not suspected.

The search for the male will be continuing today as the NRPS Marine Unit will be conducting searches in the River. The Niagara Parks Police with the assistance of Niagara Helicopters will also be conducting aerial based searches of the river.
