Crash leads to weapons charges for one in St. Catharines

Police say they found the weapon hidden near a residence while investigating

Police say they found a loaded gun hidden near the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Saturday morning.

On Saturday, May 8, 2021, at 6:24 a.m., 1 District (St. Catharines/Thorold) uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) were called by members of the public regarding a motor vehicle collision in the City of St. Catharines.

Officers attended Meredith Drive near Rendale Avenue and found a 2007 grey Honda Civic that had collided with an unoccupied parked Toyota Tundra. The Honda Civic had three occupants at the time of the collision. They were all treated at the scene by Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics and subsequently transported to a local hospital.

A loaded firearm was located hidden by a nearby residence in close proximity to the collision scene.

While at the hospital, officers formed grounds to believe the male driver had been in possession of the firearm and he was arrested.  He was later released from medical care and transported to the NRPS Prisoner Management Unit in Niagara Falls.

As a result of the investigation, Daniel Grant (20 years old) of St. Catharines has been arrested and charged with the following criminal offences:

  • Possession of a restricted firearm without holding a license S. 91(1) CC
  • Possession of a restricted firearm knowingly not holding a license S. 92(1) CC
  • Possession of a firearm knowing serial number tampered with S. 108(1)(b)
  • Careless storage of a firearm S. 86(1)
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle S. 94(1) CC
  • Possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition S. 95(1) CC
  • Possession of a firearm obtained by crime S. 96(1)(2) CC
  • Possession of a firearm contrary to prohibition order S. 117.01(1)

Daniel Grant was held in custody in order to attend a video bail hearing at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines on May 9, 2021.

The two passengers of the Honda Civic were both released from medical care without serious injuries.

Damage to the Honda Civic was estimated at $20,000.

Damage to the Toyota Tundra was estimated at $5,000.
