A farmers market with fresh produce, local baked goods and artisan crafts could come to Thorold this summer, after city council seemed keen on the idea in a meeting on Tuesday night.

Councillors decided to dust off plans that were in the works during spring 2020, right before the pandemic, of a local farmers market, which could not go forward due to Covid putting a halt to the idea. Now, coun. Jim Handley said, interest is beginning to become evident in the community again,.

"I believe we can make this happen," Handley said. "I have interested parties already.”

He mentioned Small Scale Farms as one of the potential staples, and pointed to the many local producers of goods around the area.

While no definitive plans for where, when and how the market would go ahead, ideas tossed around the meeting included the revamped Battle of Beaverdams Park, currently under construction, the end of Front St. or the area around Firehall 1, which was home to a farmers market several years ago.

The plans were brought up just weeks after another major event, a weekly car show on Front St, was announced for this summer.
