Several days of striking is set to hit schools in the Niagara area this week.

The Catholic school board will close its schools on Tuesday as the union organizing its teachers will go ahead with a province-wide walkout for the second time in just weeks.

On Thursday and Friday the DSBN schools will close in response to the public teachers walking off the job in a province-wide, as well as a rotating strike action.

The contentious negotiations between teachers and the province resumed last week but broke down on Friday night,

"The government has continued to signal reasonableness on issues from special education supports to efforts to counter violence in schools. Yet, the teachers' union leadership push for compensation that comes with a substantial cost to the taxpayer", education minister Stephen Lecce said in a written statement after the latest round of bargaining collapsed before the weekend.

Lecce said that the mediator has called off discussions for now, but that the government is ready to resume talks.
