NOTL artist Ron Clavier's new exhibit portrays journey of aging

The artist's exhibit is a testament to his commitment to emotional wellness and the positive impacts of aging.

Ron Clavier's show titled Coming of Age is currently at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Pumphouse Arts Centre in the Joyner Gallery. His artwork challenges the conventional notion of coming of age, which is typically tied to legal adulthood based on age, he says.

Aging is often associated with negative connotations in society, but Clavier encourages viewers to appreciate the continuous process of personal growth, regardless of age. Through this exhibit, aging is redefined as a journey of ongoing learning and emotional wellness.

Clavier's inspiration permeates his artistic and professional endeavours. The subject of each of the 17 representational paintings in the exhibition derives from his professional experience as neuroscientist, psychologist, author and educator. He summarizes this philosophy as ‘seeing eye to eye.’ Through this interaction, a richer, three-dimensional comprehension of art emerges, wherein viewers can look beyond aesthetic appeal, and reflect on their own experiences and perceptions, he believes.

Coming of Age stands as a testament to Clavier's commitment to fostering emotional wellness and celebrating the positive impact of aging. Despite the changes that come with age, each painting highlights the "upside" of growing older. Clavier says of his work, "It is a reminder that aging equips individuals with wisdom and experience, leading to personal growth and satisfaction.”

Aimee Medina, marketing and communications manager at the Pumphouse, says "Exhibits such as Coming of Age reinforces the arts centre's  position as the artistic hub of the community, supporting diverse perspectives and creative expressions."

The public is invited to the show's opening reception on Sunday, April 7th, from 2 to 4 p.m., and will have the opportunity to talk with the artist, savour the artwork, and connect with fellow art appreciators over refreshments and nibbles.

This event is supported by Chateau des Charmes.

In conjunction with the exhibit, Clavier will engage in a conversation entitled Seeing Eye to Eye with the Artist on two separate occasions:

April 13 and 26. These conversations will be offered to the public at no charge. In leading these discussions, Clavier says he will dispel many of the  misconceptions about aging. He will also look critically on society's emphasis on chronological youth, providing a great opportunity to learn about aging from an artistic point of view.

The sessions are 2 to 4 p.m. at the pumphouse. To register visit niagarapumphouse.ca/programs/eye-to-eye-with-the-artist-a-coversation-with-ron-clavier-coming-of-age-ap-24-20
