The region’s count of active COVID-19 infections is just shy of 600 today after 64 new cases were added to the growing number of cases that has contributed to significant increases in the past week.

64 new infections were confirmed on Friday.

Another hospitalization was also noted by Niagara Health, leaving the number of hospitalized patients at 18, with 6 in the ICU.

The majority are unvaccinated, according to the breakdown, which show 14 unvaccinated and 4 vaccinated patients.

There are currently 13 outbreaks ongoing in the region, which includes an outbreak at the Thorold Jail.

Earlier this week, Niagara Region Public Health declared an outbreak at Eden High School in St Catharines, leading to the school board dismissing all students for the semester.

This dismissal stems from a current outbreak at the school and is a measure to proactively prevent further spread of COVID-19 within the school and to the community.

Eden will move to online learning for the rest of December.
