WATCH: Trudeau announcement regarding Emergencies Act

Military will not be deployed in order to deal with blockades, the prime minister said

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made an announcement today after it was revealed earlier today that he will invoke the Emergencies Act as protests and blockades continue in Ottawa and across the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Justice Minister David Lametti joined the prime minister during the press conference.

The Emergencies Act replaced the War Measures Act in 1988, which was used on just three occasions – during both the First and Second World Wars, and during the 1970 FLQ crisis.

This marks the first time in Canadian history that the Emergencies Act has been invoked.

The Prime Minister stated during the press conference that the military will not be deployed in order to deal with blockades.
