The Thorold Anchors senior men’s ball team will host an Ontario Baseball Championship (OBA) tournament on Labour Day weekend, with 12 teams competing. Opening ceremonies kick off the event on Friday, Aug. 30.
Mayor Terry Ugulini, along with Councillors Anthony Longo and John Kenny, and the City’s CAO Manoj Dilwaria, are scheduled to meet with various provincial ministers to discuss Thorold issues while attending the annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference in Ottawa from Aug. 18 to 21.
A budget overrun of $150,000 was approved to repair the elevator at the Ontario Paper Company Seniors Centre at 8 Carleton Street.
Coun. Carmen DeRose expressed his thanks to city staff for installing new bleachers in C.E. Grose Park, and questioned grasscutting protocol when people are in the park. According to the city’s engineering manager Sean Dunsmore, outdoor maintenance staff stays “as far away as possible” from the public but if forced to wait until parks are completely empty, “It’s difficult to get the grass cut.” He agreed to review safety measures with staff.
A public meeting was held on Aug. 6 regarding amended street parking policies on Ann Street. When Coun. Jim Handley asked for a second public meeting to resolve the issue, Dunsmore recommended waiting for the staff report, which will include recommendations based on residents’ feedback from the first meeting. The report “will be part of the Sept. 3 (council) meeting,” he said.
Audio and visual technical enhancements have been made to the Thorold city hall council chambers.
Jodi Shanoff, vice president of Environics Analytics, presented the firm’s findings from a recent phone survey it conducted regarding regional governance in Niagara. The survey was initiated by the 13 CAOs of Niagara municipalities. The presentation was already made to the Region and covered by the Thorold News here.
