City looking to install additional benches in Beaverdams Park

City Hall wants to install eight memorial benches facing the band shelter and six more along the park pathways

Even though Battle of Beaverdams Park re-opened about a month ago, there’s still some work that needs to be done until the park is complete.

According to a new City Hall report, the city is considering putting an additional 14 commemorative benches into the newly updated park.

Eight of those benches would be set up facing the band shelter, and six of those would be set up along the park pathways.

"The inclusion of permanent benches facing the band shelter are to be considered for concert events," reads the report.

The 14 extra benches will compliment the eight stationary benches already approved in the park's master plan.

Of those eight benches, two are to be designated ‘Chat benches,’ which will feature a banner or card that indicates that whoever is sitting on the bench is open to a conversation. The 'chat benches' are supposed to help combat everyday mental health struggles by inspiring people to connect with each other.

The City Hall report states that of the six commemorative benches initially approved, two have been purchased by residents to date.

Residents who are interested in purchasing a commemorative or memorial bench, are invited to contact Thorold City Hall at 905-227-6613 for more information.

No timeline for the installation of the proposed extra benches was provided in the report. The matter is to go before city council tonight.
