Battle of Beaverdams Park ready for Canada Day festivities

A City Hall report says Canada Day celebrations can take place at the park: 'Although there is a risk with excess rain we believe the conditions at the park will be manageable'

Thorold has set its sights on Battle of Beaverdams Park as the location for the city's Canada Day celebrations. Even though the park is not yet fully complete, a new City Hall report is confident that the recently renovated green space will be able to host the two-day event.

As ThoroldToday has previously reported, Battle of Beaverdams Park has been under renovation for the past year. Due to a few construction delays, the park missed its fall 2021 completion date—but now the official re-opening of the park seems closer than ever.

Earlier this month, the city announced that the park would be inaugurated with a Canada Day and Rock 'N Blues on the Battlefield event. The festivities involve a family magic show, live music, and fireworks on Friday, July 1, and a rock and blues festival on Saturday, July 2.

The new City Hall report acknowledges that there is still work to be done in the park, but that it is sufficiently complete to be used as an event space.

“As the park is in its final elements of completion, staff have strategically arranged for sod to be placed in high traffic areas,” reads the report. “All the hardscaping is complete creating excellent pathway corridors for patrons to make their way around the park.”

As shown on the photographs taken this morning by ThoroldToday, the park has come a long way in the last few months. However, there is still work to be done.

“In short the park will be complete for Canada Day Celebrations," the report continues. "Although there is a risk with excess rain we believe the conditions at the park will be manageable based on the steps that have been taken.”

City Hall suggests that they could prepare McMillan Park as a contingency plan but that this would cost an additional $20,000.

The report concludes: “Staff recommend the planned event remains at Battle of Beaverdams Park to showcase the newly renovated outdoor space.”

The report will be discussed at Tuesday night’s city council meeting.
