City Hall flies Ukrainian flag in act of solidarity

The city of Thorold joins 'members of the Ukrainian-Canadian community and the world in condemning Russia's egregious unprovoked attack,' says Mayor Terry Ugulini

The Ukrainian flag is flying outside City Hall—a gesture of solidarity against "Russia's egregious unprovoked attack."

In a statement released on the city's website, Mayor Terry Ugulini says Thorold "stands with the people of the Ukraine, as well as the proud Ukrainian community here in Niagara and we hope for a swift and immediate end to this attack on democracy, human rights and freedom."

The yellow and blue of Ukraine are on display beside the Canadian flag.

The mayor's full statement is below:

I, along with my regional counterparts and our nation, join members of the Ukrainian-Canadian community and the world in condemning Russia’s egregious unprovoked attack on the Ukraine.

These actions have impacted the lives of millions, has sparked a level of uncertainty and instability in the world at a time when collaboration, partnership and peace should be our focus. We all know too well the negative impacts of war on innocent people including children, and that it is ultimately not the answer in establishing a way forward.

I stand with the Prime Minister of Canada, and many other leaders, in calling on Russia to immediately end all hostile actions against Ukraine, and that it withdraw all military forces from the country. It is deeply concerning given the complete disregard for international law and the significant and imminent risk of harm that is so obvious as a result of these actions.

The City of Thorold stands with the people of the Ukraine, as well as the proud Ukrainian community here in Niagara and we hope for a swift and immediate end to this attack on democracy, human rights and freedom.

As a symbol of our solidarity, we raise the Ukrainian flag here at Thorold City hall today.
