City aims to finish snow removal operations by next week

While snow-clearing efforts are underway, the city by-law that states people should shovel their sidewalks won't be enforced, according to the city's manager of public works

Thorold residents have been venting online about what they view as the city's lacklustre effort to remove snow from sidewalks and streets.

At yesterday’s meeting of the city's Road Safety Committee, one member pressed Steve Santo, Thorold's manager of public works, about the snow-removal efforts. The member wanted to know what recommendations are in place for safely using city roads, and what by-laws exist to ensure people shovel their sidewalks.

“I get that they haven’t cleared their sidewalks and by-law is not enforcing it at this time so people can catch up,” Santo answered. “We’re still doing ours as well.”

Santo also shared a few tips for safely navigating snow-filled sidewalks.

“Try not to walk on the road, try to walk on the sidewalks that are clean,” he said. “But if you do, make sure you are aware of the traffic. It’s probably safer to walk on the road right now because it has been salted.”

And when it comes to clearing the streets of all the excess snow, Santo said the city should be finished soon.

“They will be all caught up on our end probably early next week because the weather is changing," he said.
