The organizers of a summer food drive on June 14 for Community Care hope that they can beat last years total of 4500 pounds collected.

Around 25 people have volunteered to be drop-off points for donations across Thorold and are getting the word out through neighbourhood flyers.

The initiative is sponsored by area churches and One Thorold and was also done last year around this time.

The summer can get tight for the food bank as people are going away and get occupied with projects, said local organizer Hilda VanderKlippe.

“More people have a need for the food bank. People have lost jobs and businesses are not doing well.”

She says while donations are always welcome, now is a critical time to help out.

Items in need include nut-free granola bars, canned spaghetti sauce, peanut butter and more.
