After several days with a higher daily average than earlier this summer, Niagara Public Health reports a single case of confirmed COVID-19 on Thursday for the second time this week.

There are now 57 active cases of the virus in the region, primarily found in Niagara-on-the-Lake after Lincoln, which previously was the municipality with the highest number of active cases, has seen its case count drop.

Niagara Falls comes in second with 2.6 active cases per 10,000 residents.

The number of outbreaks in medical facilities has decreased too.

The infection is now found at three facilities in the region, with St Catharine’s Garden City Manor being the longest-running outbreak of the ones that are still active.

Yesterday, eight new cases were found of which one was an international traveler who had recently returned from a location where the infection is more prevalent, despite sharp recommendations from authorities not to travel internationally due to the pandemic.

Public Health said the individual isolated once returning from the trip and do not believe the case poses a great risk of spread to Niagara residents.

Earlier this week, the region’s acting medical officer of health, Dr. Mustafa Hirji said he was concerned that the recent numbers aren’t reflecting the reality of how the infection spreads in the region, as some might have refrained from testing when going into the long weekend.

878 Niagara residents have to date been diagnosed with the virus.

64 individuals have died after contracting the infection.
