NRPH reports 1,001 active cases of COVID-19 on Monday, after 100 new cases were confirmed after the weekend.
There are 23 active outbreaks in health-care settings and 20 other ongoing outbreaks.
Non-outbreak cases continue to be the leading category, with close contact reported as the most common cause of transmission.
142 Niagara residents have died after contracting the virus.
Thorold has had 183 confirmed cases since the first case of the virus was confirmed in Niagara on March 13, 2020.
Ontario update:
Public Health Ontario has reported 3,270 new cases of COVID-19 today.
The province reported 29 deaths in today's update. Of those, 14 were residents of long-term care homes. Two of the deaths reported today were individuals between 40 and 59 years old, 12 were between 60 and 79 years old, and 15 were over the age of 80.
Since yesterday, 70 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19, and 15 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units.
Today's two updates provided by the province's public health agency today also reported the following:
- 2,074 new recoveries
- 1,190 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 998 reported yesterday. The province notes more than 10 per cent of hospitals do not submit bed census data on weekends, so the number of COVID patients hospitalized could be underreported.
- There are 333 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 329 on yesterday) and 194 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 228 yesterday)
- 24,778 current active cases in Ontario, which is up from 23,611 reported yesterday
- The province reported 39,121 tests processed yesterday resulting in a 9.7 per cent positivity rate, which is tied for the highest rate on record (the same rate was reported Dec. 29). The province's goal is three per cent.
- There is a backlog of 19,683 tests awaiting processing.
- Of the 3,270 cases reported today, 917 are from Toronto, 581 are from Peel, 389 are from York Region, and 54 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
- Based on case data reported today, the new cases include 380 people under 20, 1,238 people between 20 and 39 years old, 979 people between 40 and 59 years old, 495 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 177 people over the age of 80.
- There were 4,808 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered yesterday. There have been 42,419 doses of the vaccines administered to date. The vaccine approved for use requires two doses given 21 days apart.
Public Health Ontario has confirmed 194,232 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 164,775 recoveries and 4,679 deaths, of which 2,843 were individuals living in long-term care homes
The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,306.7 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 124.1 cases per 100,000 people from Dec. 25 to Dec. 31, which is up by 17.9 per cent compared to Dec. 19-25 when the average weekly incidence rate was 105.3 cases per 100,000 people.
