Niagara Region's council has passed a bylaw making face coverings mandatory across the region.

The vote passed during a Thursday night council meeting after the issue was deferred from a meeting two weeks ago.

The bylaw will require masks to be worn at all indoor establishments, including public transit.

Businesses must now put up signs stating that masks are mandatory and also offer hand sanitizer at all entrances.

The new bylaw will come into effect on July 31 and can be enforced by municipal by-law officers, police, or other regional staff.

Not wearing a mask could come with a price.

"Upon conviction, every person who contravenes any provision in this By-law is liable to a fine not exceeding one thousand dollars ($1,000), exclusive of costs, for each offence," the bylaw states.

Officials have previously indicated that due to the difficulties with enforcing the bylaw, it will focus heavily on education as opposed to punishment.

Two councilors opposed the motion to pass the bylaw; West Lincoln Mayor David Bylsma and Niagara-on-the-Lake councilor Gary Zalepa.

More to come.
