NRPH reports 196 COVID-19 cases and 15 new deaths in a new record-setting day for the pandemic impact in Niagara.
186 Niagara residents have now died after contracting the virus.
Niagara now has 1,013 active cases and 46 outbreaks.
Late last night, Niagara Health confirmed an outbreak at the St Catharines emergency department after five staff members tested positive.
Tufford Manor in St Catharines is the latest to be added to the list of ongoing outbreaks in long-term care settings.
74 patients with COVID-19 are receiving care in hospital according to Niagara Health.
Ontario update
Public Health Ontario has reported a record 4,249 new cases of COVID-19 today, the highest number of new cases reported in a single day to date.
Today's case total includes 450 cases from Toronto that were confirmed on Jan. 5 and 6 but not previously reported. Without those cases, there are 3,799 new COVID cases, which is still a record number of cases reported in a day.
The province reported 26 deaths in today's update. Of those, 15 were residents of long-term care homes. One of the deaths reported today was an individual between 20 and 39 years old, one was between 40 and 59 years old, seven were individuals between 60 and 79 years old, and 17 were over the age of 80.
Since yesterday, 163 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19, and 18 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units.
Today's two updates provided by the province's public health agency today also reported the following:
- 2,738 new recoveries
- 1,446 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 1,472 reported yesterday.
- There are 369 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 363 yesterday) and 250 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 242 yesterday).
- 28,203 current active cases in Ontario, which is up from 26,718 reported yesterday
- The province reported 71,481 tests processed yesterday resulting in a 6.2 per cent positivity rate. The province's goal is three per cent.
- There is a backlog of 73,067 tests awaiting processing.
- Of the 4,249 cases reported today, 1,382 are from Toronto (including the backlog of unreported cases), 691 are from Peel, 427 are from York Region, and 75 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
- Based on case data reported today, the new cases include 558 people under 20, 1,618 people between 20 and 39 years old, 1,217 people between 40 and 59 years old, 602 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 259 people over the age of 80.
- There were 14,932 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on Jan. 7, up from 12,251 on Jan. 6.
- As of 8 p.m. on Jan. 7, the province reports 87,563 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
- There are 4,053 total vaccinations completed (both doses). The vaccine approved for use requires two doses given 21 days apart.
Public Health Ontario has confirmed 208,394 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 175,309 recoveries and 4,882 deaths, of which 2,943 were individuals living in long-term care homes
The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,402 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 147.7 cases per 100,000 people from Dec. 29 to Jan. 4, which is up by 31.6 per cent compared to Dec. 23-29 when the average weekly incidence rate was 112.2 cases per 100,000 people.
