Welland stabbing incident leaves victim with serious injuries

On Sept. 23, 2021 at approximately 2 p.m., 3 District Welland uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) responded to a report of a stabbing in Welland.

Officers attended the area of Patsy Avenue and 6Th Street and located a man in his 30s suffering from serious stab injuries. The male victim was treated at the scene by Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics and transported to a local hospital. The victim was then transported to an out of region hospital by Ornge air ambulance for what is believed to be serious but non life-threatening injuries.

Officers were able to locate and arrest a suspect nearby.

Darren John Verge (44 years) of Welland has been arrested and charged with the criminal offences of:
    •    aggravated assault - CC section 268(1)
    •    fail to comply with probation order - CC section 733.1(1) (two counts)

Verge is being held in custody to attend a video bail hearing at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines on Sept. 24, 2021.

This is believed to a be targeted incident.

The incident is being investigated by the 3 District detective office and members of the NRPS Forensic Services Unit.
