Welland man facing weapon charges after standoff with police

The suspect had a rifle in his hand as he was arguing with the two victims

On Tuesday Dec. 5, 3 District (Welland/Pelham) uniform officers with the Niagara Regional Police Service attended a residence in the area of Alberta Street and Avon Street, in the City of Welland in regard to a disturbance call.

Investigation revealed a male was engaged in an argument with a female and a male at this location. The suspect had a rifle in his hand as he was arguing with the two victims. The male victim approached the suspect and requested he put the firearm down. The suspect refused and the victim made attempts to pull the firearm away however was unable to do so.  As a result, the suspect uttered threats before barricading himself inside the house. 

Officers and detectives with 3 District arrived on scene and set up containment on the residence.  Officers were able to have communication with the suspect. As a result, police were able to safely remove the suspect from the residence and place him under arrest.

Jason Azotoni, 35, of Welland was arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Uttering threats
  • Possession of a weapon

AzotoniI was held for bail and expected to appear in video bail court at the Robert S.K Welch Courthouse on Dec. 6.
