A Welland man already facing a robbery charge following a Boxing Day incident downtown now faces a second count of robbery after another incident Monday at a different downtown business.

Just after 8 p.m. Monday, a male entered a hotel business in the downtown core of the City of Guelph. A verbal argument ensued with the front desk clerk over the male’s refusal to wear a mask. When the clerk turned away, [it is alleged that] the male reached over the counter and stole his Apple iPhone and left the business.

The adult male clerk quickly realized the phone was missing and followed the male, catching up to him near Carden Street and Wyndham Street North. When the clerk asked for the phone, the suspect punched him in the head and fled on foot.

A 23-year-old Welland male is charged with robbery. He was held for a bail hearing Tuesday morning. The same male had been charged with robbery two days earlier after he entered a convenience store in the downtown core, pushed the owner and removed cash from the register. Following that incident he had been released with a court date of April 23, 2021.

The 25-year-old victim of Monday’s incident, a resident of Guelph, was transported to Guelph General Hospital where he required stitches to close a small cut on his head.
