Victim stabbed attempting to make citizen’s arrest in St. Catharines: Police

On March 24, 2021 at approximately 3:37 a.m., Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) 1 – District St. Catharines uniform officers were called to a residence in St. Catharines for a report of a violent break and enter.

Officers arrived on scene at a home in the area of Sherman Drive and Overholt Street in St. Catharines. Officers located a male victim in his 30s suffering from stab wounds. The initial investigation by officers determined that at approximately 3:30 a.m. the victim discovered three males in his vehicle in his driveway.

The victim chased after the suspects as they ran away. The victim was able to catch one of the suspects a short distance away. During the physical altercation that occurred when the victim attempted to perform a citizen’s arrest, he was stabbed. The suspect then ran from the area.

The victim was treated for non life-threatening injuries by paramedics from Niagara Emergency Medical Service. He was transported to a local hospital for further care.

A search of the area by uniform officers and a canine unit was not able to locate the suspects.

The investigation was assigned to 1 District detectives. That investigation led detectives to also identify a residential break and enter at another property on Sherman Drive with the same three suspects. As a result of the investigation, three youth suspects were identified.

On March 25, 2021, detectives arrested all three suspects.

A 15-year-old male from St. Catharines turned himself into detectives and was arrested and charged with the criminal offences of:
    •    Assault with a weapon Section 267(a) CCC
    •    Break and enter dwelling house with intent Section 348(1)(a) CCC
    •    Theft under $5,000 (from motor vehicle) Section 334(b) CCC

A 16-year-old male from St. Catharines turned himself into detectives and was arrested and charged with the criminal offences of:
    •    Break and enter dwelling house with intent Section 348(1)(a) CCC
    •    Theft under $5,000 (from motor vehicle) Section 334(b) CCC

A 14-year-old male from St. Catharines turned himself into detectives and was arrested and charged with the criminal offences of:
    •    Break and enter dwelling house with intent Section 348(1)(a) CCC
    •    Theft under $5,000 (from motor vehicle) Section 334(b) CCC

All three youths were processed and released from custody with conditions and future court dates.

The Youth Criminal Justice Act of Canada prohibits the NRPS from identifying the youths involved in this matter.

Members of the public in the area of the incidents with closed circuit cameras, doorbell video cameras or dash cameras are being asked to review their footage for suspicious activity for the period between 2:30 and 4 a.m. on March 24, 2021.
