In January 2022, the Central Fraud Unit of the Niagara Regional Police Service began an investigation into the sale of counterfeit money.

In December 2021, a collector local to the Niagara Region believed he was purchasing an extremely rare 1921 Canadian 50 cent coin for $25,000. Depending on its condition, the value of this coin can far exceed the value of $25,000. Upon receiving the coin from the seller, the coin was determined to be counterfeit.

Over the course of the subsequent investigation a suspect was identified, and on May 17, 2022 he was arrested by detectives.

Jeffrey J. Thomson (61 years of age) of Waterloo has been arrested and charged with the following:
    •    Fraud over $5,000, contrary to Section 380(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
    •    Utter counterfeit money, contrary to Section 452(a) of the Criminal Code

Jeffrey J. Thomson was released on a Form 10 – Undertaking with a future court and fingerprint date.
