Police say a 19-year-old suspended driver from Thorold was charged after the vehicle he was driving was stopped in a RIDE check Friday night.

Niagara Regional Police Service say officers stopped 400 vehicles and inquired if any of the drivers had consumed alcohol or drugs earlier in the evening.

In total, 23 drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath for analysis, police said in a news release.

One was required to complete a standard field sobriety test, police say.

Police said all drivers provided a breath sample in the acceptable range and the driver taking the field sobriety tests also passed.

Police said in one of the traffic stops, an officer discovered a 19-year-old driver, a resident of Thorold, was suspended from driving in Ontario.

He was charged with driving while under suspension, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

Police did not release the driver's name.
