Suspected impaired driver dies dies in hospital after being shot by police

At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021, 2 District (Niagara Falls/Niagara on the Lake) uniform officers were called to the area of Lundy’s Lane and Corwin Ave. following the report of a suspected impaired driver.

At approximately 2:22 p.m., the vehicle was located in the area of Line 3 and the Niagara River Parkway in the Town of Niagara on the Lake. There was an interaction with an adult male and he was subsequently shot by police.

The male was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries where he was pronounced deceased.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked their mandate.

There are road closures in the area of Line 3 at Concession 1, as well as the Niagara Parkway closed at Line 2 and Line 4.

The incident is also being investigated by detectives from the NRPS.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

As the SIU has invoked its mandate, we are prohibited from releasing further details.
