St. Catharines man facing theft, weapons charges after dispute over allegedly stolen mail

On Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021, at approximately at 11:50 a.m., 1 District (St. Catharines) uniform officers, the Emergency Task Unit, K9 and Crisis Negotiators, with the Niagara Regional Police Service attended the area of Queenston Street and Lorne Street, in the City of St. Catharines in response to an armed/barricaded person call for service.

Investigation revealed a 21-year-old male had approached his 27-year-old male neighbour, in a multi-unit complex about his mail being stolen. As a result, the 27-year-old allegedly pulled out a gun and waved it at the 21-year-old male.

Officers arrived on scene and immediately contained the house. Subsequently, members of the public in the immediate area were evacuated and people were advised to avoid the area.

At approximately 3:40 p.m., officers executed a warrant.  As a result, the suspect was arrested.

Joseph J. Carey (27 years old), of St. Catharines was arrested and charged with the following offences of:

  • Theft from mail Section 356(1)(A)(I) Criminal Code of Canada
  • Pointing a firearm Section 87(1) Criminal Code of Canada
  • Possession of a weapon Section 88(1) Criminal Code of Canada

Carey also had unrelated warrants for his arrest.

Carey was held in custody pending a bail hearing that is expected to take place on Feb.18, 2021.
