Single-vehicle collision leads to arrest in Welland

A 32-year-old Welland man faces charges after Niagara Regional Police responded to a single-vehicle collision with possible injuries.

On July 28 officers arrived on the scene near South Pelham Road and Foss Road, a news release said. Officers saw a white 2022 Hyundai Sonata off the roadway into the adjacent tree line. Police spoke briefly with the driver, who then suddenly ran from the scene into a wooded area. The driver swam through a nearby pond and ran into a residential neighbourhood to evade the pursuing officers.

An NRPS K9 Unit (Police Service Dog Jax) arrived to conduct a track.  At 9:15 a.m. the driver was found hiding in a backyard on South Pelham Road and arrested.

An area retirement home had been placed in lockdown.

Mohamud Mohamud Hassan is charged with the Criminal Code offences of:

  • Impaired operation of a conveyance – drug
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand – drug
  • Flight from peace officer
  • Fail to stop at the scene of an accident avoid 

Hassan was later released on a Form 10 undertaking with a future court date.
