MISSISSAUGA – The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal collision that occurred today in St. Catharines.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • At approximately 10 a.m. on May 25, 2021, a Niagara Regional Police Service officer was traveling westbound on Welland Street when he observed a man without a helmet riding a mini-motorcycle eastbound on Welland Street. In addition, the mini-motorcycle was missing a licence plate.

  • A short time later, the mini-motorcycle turned left onto Taylor Street and struck a pole.
  • The man was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled to take place tomorrow morning in Toronto.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
