Police lay more charges in Welland weapons incident

Police say they have laid more charges in connection with an incident on Sunday in Welland.

After a woman received minor injuries after being struck by a vehicle in a parking lot, the driver fled to a home on State Street where police say a weapon was brandished and threats made.

Crisis negotiators were brought in and a suspect was eventually arrested.

Niagara Regional Police now say that as a result of information surrounding the involvement of a firearm, a search warrant was executed on the State Street residence on Monday, where detectives seized a replica firearm, knife, baseball bat and a bolt action .22 rifle.

James Hellam, 38, of Welland was arrested and charged with the additional Criminal Code offences of:

  • Assault with a Weapon (2 Counts)
  • Dangerous Operation (1 Count)
  • Failure to Stop after Accident (1 Count)
  • Uttering Threats (2 Counts)
  • Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon (2 Counts)
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose (1 Count)
  • Careless use of a Firearm (1 Count)
  • Possession of a Firearm knowing Possession is Unauthorized (1 count)

The scene has since been released and nearby roads reopened, police said in a news release.

Hellam was held in custody for a video bail hearing at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines where he was remanded into custody.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Hellam is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
