Police investigating fatal pedestrian collison on Welland Avenue

On Jan. 18, 2024, at 7 p.m. emergency services personnel were called for a report of a serious collision involving a pedestrian and a van in St. Catharines.

1 District (St. Catharines / Thorold) uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics, and St. Catharines Fire Service personnel attended to the intersection of Welland Avenue and Vine Street South. The male pedestrian in his 30s was pronounced deceased at the scene due to his injuries.

The initial investigation has determined that the pedestrian had been in the roadway when they were struck by an east bound grey Toyota Sienna van. The driver a of the van, a 71-year-old man from St. Catharines remained on scene and is co-operating with the investigating officers.

Detectives from the NRPS Collision Reconstruction Unit (RECON) have been assigned to the investigation. Detectives from the NRPS Forensic Services Unit are also assisting in the investigation. The investigation remains active and ongoing as detectives determine the circumstances leading up to the collision.

The intersection of Welland Avenue and Vine Street South had been closed for the investigation but has since re-opened.
