Pet owner charged after dog found in hot car

Officers in Niagara-on-the-Lake broke the driver's side window to help the animal that appear to be in distress

On Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021 at approximately 5:29 p.m., 2 District (Niagara Falls/Niagara-on-the-Lake) uniform officers attended the Outlet Collection at Niagara located at 300 Taylor Rd. in the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake in regards to an animal complaint.

Officers arrived on scene and located a small dog with white fur in a vehicle that had been turned off. The dog appeared to be in distress displaying heavy panting and barking, drawing the attention of members of the public. Police were contacted to attend due to the high temperatures and the dog starting to show signs of suffering.

The dog was attempting to exit the vehicle at different windows consistently, and appeared to be in extreme distress. After not being able to contact the driver, police broke the driver's side window.

The owner attended a short time later.

Jeyapragash Pulendrarajah (39 years old) of Whitby, Ont., was arrested and charged with the following offence of:
    •    cause unnecessary suffering

Pulendrarajah was release on a Form 9 - Appearance Notice with a future court date.
