One person shot, two sprayed with bear spray in jewelry robbery

On May 11, 2022, at approximately 11:30 a.m., officers assigned to 1 District (St. Catharines) responded to Karat Jewellers located at 285 Geneva Street, in the City of St. Catharines for reports of an armed robbery.

Upon arrival, officers confirmed Karat Jewellers had been robbed at gunpoint. Two individuals inside the store were sprayed with a substance believed to be “bear spray.”  As the suspect fled the store, shots were fired, and an individual was struck. All three victims were transported to a local hospital by Niagara Emergency Medical Service (NEMS) paramedics. The shooting victim has since been transported to an out-of-town trauma centre for further medical treatment. The shooting victim is currently listed in serious condition with non life-threatening injuries.

The suspects fled the scene on a motorcycle, believed to be a sports bike. The motorcycle was last seen on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) travelling Toronto bound.

The descriptions of the suspects are as follows:

Suspect No. 1

  • Dark clothing
  • Wearing a yellow full-face motorcycle helmet

Suspect No. 2

  • Dark clothing
  • Wearing a black half motorcycle helmet

Both suspects are considered to be armed and dangerous.
