On Aug 5, 2022, Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) officers assigned to 1 District (St. Catharines/Thorold) responded to an address in the city of Thorold regarding an assault investigation.
Upon arrival, officers learned a 2-year-old boy with significant medical limitations had sustained serious injuries. The child was initially transported by Niagara Emergency Medical Service (NEMS) paramedics to a local hospital prior to being taken to an out-of-town centre for advanced and specialized care. The child is listed in stable condition and remains in hospital at this time.
Detectives assigned to the Child Abuse Unit (CAU) were notified and immediately assumed carriage of the investigation. It was determined a registered practical nurse responsible for the toddler’s care had deliberately caused the injuries to the child.
Eric Hang, 23 years of age, of Port Colborne was arrested on Aug. 8, 2022, and is charged with the following Criminal Code offences:
- Assault with a Weapon
- Aggravated Assault
- Assault (2 counts)
Hang is being held for a bail hearing scheduled to take place on Aug. 9, 2022, via video link to the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse, located at 59 Church Street, in the city of St. Catharines.
Hang has been a registered practical nurse for over a year. Given Hang’s position, detectives have concern there may be additional vulnerable victims.
The investigation is on-going and further charges may follow.
