Memorial plaque likely stolen for scrap metal, police say

The Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) and the Niagara Parks Police Service (NPPS) are investigating the theft of a memorial plaque from a park in Niagara Falls.

On Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at 5:09 p.m. NPPS officers attended the area of the Niagara Glen parking lot at 3050 Niagara River Parkway, Niagara Falls, for a theft call for service. The initial investigation determined that sometime between April 14 and April 18, 2023, an unknown suspect(s) removed a memorial plaque from a rock. The plaque described the 'Niagara River Recreation Trail' and is dated June 24, 1988. The unique plaque value has not been determined. It is suspected that it was stolen to be sold as “scrap” metal.

Detectives from the 2 District – Niagara Falls / Niagara on the Lake office of the NRPS have been assigned to the investigation. Anyone who may have knowledge of this theft or the location of the plaque are asked to contact detectives by calling 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1009677.
