Man accused of robbing and threatening taxi driver in Niagara Falls

The 24-year-old from Toronto faces robbery and weapons charges

On December, Wednesday Dec. 23, 2020, at approximately 1:00 p.m., 2 District (Niagara Falls) uniform officers attended area of Ferry Street and Main Street near the Big Bee, in the City of Niagara Falls in regards to a robbery.

Initial information revealed that a taxi was driving the suspect when the two got into a verbal dispute over the fare. The argument escalated causing the suspect to threaten the taxi driver with violence while gesturing that he had a firearm. 

The taxi driver, fearing for his safety, escaped from his vehicle as the suspect stole the money out of the taxi and fled on foot before being pursued and arrested by uniform officers.

Gibson Thuo (24 years old) of Toronto, was arrested and charged with the following offences of:

  • Robbery
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon
  • Possession of weapon contrary to prohibition order
  • Possession of weapon contrary to prohibition order
  • Fail to comply with probation order
  • Fail to comply with probation order 

Thuo was held in custody pending a bail hearing that is expected to take place on Dec. 24, 2020, at the Robert S.K Welch Courthouse, located at 59 Church Street, in the City of St. Catharines
