Fatal head-on collision under investigation in West Lincoln

26-year-old driver from Welland died following Monday afternoon crash

On July 5, 2021 at approximately 2:25 p.m., 8 District – Grimsby uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) were called to attend a report of a serious head on collision in West Lincoln.

Officers responded to the area of Canborough Road and Baldwin Road in West Lincoln (Wellandport). The initial investigation by officers determined that an eastbound black Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 26-year-old man from Welland had collided head-on with a westbound red/silver Dodge Ram pickup driven by a 55-year-old man from Canfield, Ont. The Chevrolet had been passing another eastbound vehicle at the time of the collision.

Paramedics from Niagara Emergency Medical Services and personnel from the West Lincoln Fire Services treated both drivers on-scene. The vehicles were both significantly damaged, and the drivers needed to be mechanically extricated from the wreckage.

The 26-year-old male was in critical condition and was transported to an out of region hospital by Ornge Air Ambulance. The 26-year-old male later died at the hospital because of his injuries. The 55-year-old man was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his non life-threatening injuries.

Detectives from the NRPS Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Forensic Services Unit were assigned to conduct further investigation.

The roads in the area were re-opened at approximately 11:55 p.m.
