Driver charged with impaired after vehicle rolls over, catches fire

On Aug. 28, 2020 at approximately 1:39 a.m., 1 District St. Catharines uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) responded to a report of a single vehicle rollover in the area of Louth Street and Crestcombe Road in St. Catharines.

Callers to 911 reported the car, a grey 2009 Buick, was on fire and that the driver had ran from the scene.

The St. Catharines Fire Service attended the scene and extinguished the fire.

A NRPS K9 team was called in to assist. Police Service Dog Jax and his officer handler tracked the driver from the scene to the area of Cornwell Circle and Vintage Crescent. At approximately 2:15 a.m., the uninjured driver was arrested.

Adam Malik, 24 years old of Toronto, has been arrested and charged with the alleged offences of: 

  • Fail to stop at scene of accident  
  • Impaired operation of a motor vehicle

Malik was released from custody on a form 10 Undertaking with a future court date.

Malik has been issued an administrative driver's licence suspension (ADLS). The ADLS, is issued to everyone charged with similar driving offences. The ADLS prohibits him from operating a motor vehicle for 90 days from date it was issued.
