Arrest made in stolen statue investigation

Statue has not been recovered and police believe at least one other suspect remains at large

The investigation into the theft of the bronze statue of Lieutenant General Drummond has been ongoing by 2 District Niagara Falls detectives.

Detectives have been able to identify a suspect. On Oct. 7, 2021, detectives arrested a Niagara Falls man.

Shawn Matthew Mayhew (43 years) of Niagara Falls has been arrested and charged with the criminal offences of:
    •    theft over $5,000 - S. 334(a) C.C.
    •    fail to comply with undertaking - S. 145(4)(a) C.C.
    •    fail to comply with probation - S. 733.1(1) C.C.

Mayhew was held in custody and will attend a video bail hearing at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines on Oct. 8, 2021.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives believe there is at least one other suspect.

A tactic used by metal thieves to deceive or hide evidence is to cut the stolen metal item into smaller pieces so that it can transported and sold off easier. The statue has not been located. Members of the public and scrap metal recyclers are asked to be on the look out for the statue.
