Arrest made in Niagara Falls arson investigation

On Sunday, Nov. 29, 2020 at approximately 9:30 p.m., 2 District Niagara Falls uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) were dispatched to a truck on fire in the driveway of a Niagara Falls home.

Officers arrived on scene with the Niagara Falls Fire Department at a home in the area of Heximer Avenue near Dunn Street. A grey 2017 Ford 350 pickup truck was on fire in the driveway. The flames were threatening to catch a nearby home on fire as well.

The fire was extinguished by the fire department. The truck was destroyed with damage estimated at $80,000. Damage to the home is estimated at $10,000.

The truck/home owner was in the house at the time of the incident. They were not injured.

The investigation was taken over by 2 District detectives.

On Dec. 1, 2020, Stephen Burns (54 years old) of no fixed address, was arrested. Burns is charged with the following offences of:
    •    Arson - damage to property, Section 434 of the Criminal Code
    •    Arson - disregard for human life, Section 433(a) of the Criminal Code

The truck owner and Burns are not known to each other.

Burns has been held in custody to attend a video bail hearing at the Robert S. K. Welch courthouse in St. Catharines on Dec. 2, 2020.
