Two drivers dead in Toronto highway crash caused by car travelling in wrong direction

TORONTO — Two people are dead after a highway crash in Toronto that police say is the result of a car driving the wrong way.

Ontario Provincial Police say there was a head-on collision at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Highway 401 west of Bayview Avenue.

OPP says a 35-year-old woman from Mississauga was travelling westbound in the eastbound lane and struck a car driven by a 53-year-old man from Angus, Ont.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say investigators don't know what circumstances led to the car travelling in the wrong direction, including whether snowy weather played a part.

The force is encouraging anyone with information on the crash to come forward.
