1946 – 2022

It is with saddened hearts we announce the passing of Lawrence (Larry) David Lane on October 23, 2022 at the age of 75.  Devoted husband to Sheila Foster-Lane.  Loving father to Dr. Jeremy Lane (Marcée), Jennifer Lane (Brian Rossmajer), Candy Foster and Jason Potzinger (Tricia).  He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren: Mark, Tessa, Jack, Josh, Isabella, Noah, Justyn, Olivia and Abigail.  Dear brother of Lola (David Langford), Rhonda (Charlie Smith), Doug Lane (Linda), Marta (the late Dr. Shing Wong, 2017), Lori (Ron Erwin) and Tammy Kennedy (Mike).  He will be missed by many nieces, nephews and extended family.  Predeceased by his parents, Lloyd and Evelyn Lane, and his brother, Peter.

Larry was born and raised on a dairy farm in Manitoulin Island, Ontario.  He was the eldest child of Lloyd and Evelyn Lane.  He had very fond memories of spending time with both sets of grandparents who lived nearby.

He attended Barrie Island Elementary School followed by Gore Bay High School where he won several awards for academic excellence.

In 1970, Larry graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Guelph.  After graduation, Larry returned to Manitoulin Island where he initially ran the family’s dairy farm with his father, then in partnership with his brother, Doug.

In 1972, Larry became a father for the first time to Jeremy and then again in 1974 to Jennifer.

While residing on Manitoulin Island, Larry continued to attend his local church, where he acted as a Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Church Board and as a Steward.  Concerned about his church’s lack of participation in the community he volunteered to chair the Mission and Outreach Committee. Through this committee, Larry organized a Caring Group which provided help to isolated members of the community.

Larry was the Director of Manitoulin Livestock Co-Op for six years, an active member of the Gore Bay Rotary Club and a member of the township council.

Larry enjoyed curling in the winter, rounds of croquet in the spring and gathering with friends and family all year round.

In 1979, Larry relocated to southern Ontario living in several communities including Lucan, Mississauga, Clinton, Seaforth, Wingham and St. Catharines.  Larry worked with several companies including the CNE, Cooks, TD Bank and the Bank of Montreal.  In his free time, Larry attended church where he was an elder, acted as a Boy Scout Leader, a 4H leader, and as a Big Brother Mentor.  He was also active with the Optimist Club.  Additionally, he gave several speeches during his tenure in Toastmasters International.

Larry was also quite handy and took on lots of home renovation projects including remodelling the kitchen, wall papering and painting several rooms, installing carpet, laying flooring, and building a basketball net.

Larry’s love of travel took him to various American States, including Florida, California, and Hawaii.  He also travelled internationally to Mexico, Barbados, Cuba, Bali and Hong Kong.  Larry was sure to meet up with someone he knew on almost every trip he made.

In 2007, Larry married the love of his life and soulmate, Sheila Foster.  Together the two shared a love of travelling, gardening, dancing, singing and walking.  At this point, Larry further developed his artistic side through wood carving, singing, knitting and watercolour painting.

Larry was well known to be kind, and helpful, and in his younger days always with a smile on his face and a story to tell.

In keeping with Larry’s wishes, cremation has taken place.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  As an expression of sympathy, donation to the Canadian Mental Health Association of Niagara will be appreciated by the family.  https://donate.mytributegift.org/?cid=4bee5c7ccc31cf95f31d3f147af0c6e1fa8c6885906600279b22344732a066c9&fh=FRP-308918&fp=3089186b5c6c0632d102cc0b9fbb841d8e
