Thorold Track Team Shines at Indoor Championships

Submitted by Steven Fife

While you may think of track and field as a sport only associated with warm weather, athletes who belong to a track club are able to train and compete year-round – including competing indoor throughout the winter. This past weekend, Thorold’s own track team, the Thorold Elite Track Club, earned some podium positions at the Athletics Ontario Championships held at the Toronto Track & Field Centre.

Matthew Tint was the gold medalist in the U18 Boys High Jump while teammate Noah Dommasch took silver. Both boys jumped 1.91 m. Dommasch earned another silver medal in the U18 Boys Triple Jump. Denis Tzvetkov won bronze in the U18 Boys 60 m Hurdles and the club’s 4x800 m relay team consisting of Jeremiah Bondoc, Maddox Harrison, Ryan Beauregard, and Mason Petrucci won silver.

Two athletes, Daniel Swayze and Cole Ciceran, represented Team Ontario over the weekend at a special invitational meet for the top 14 and 15 year-old track athletes in the province. Swayze earned gold in U16 Boys High Jump (1.70 m) and silver in U16 Boys Shot put (12.47 m).

In addition, in the Combined Events Championships Cole Ciceran took home gold in the U16 Boys Tetrathlon and Nathan Kowcun secured bronze. Dommasch won yet another silver. This time in the U18 Boys Pentathlon. The combined events include all disciplines in track. Athletes must be well-rounded and compete in hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put, and 1000 m indoors.

Next up for the club is another championship meet on March 2-3 for U14, U16, and U20 aged athletes, followed by a training camp in Florida over the March Break. Outdoor training begins in Niagara as weather warms up towards the end of March and beginning of April. The club is open to athletes looking to gain an edge for their school track season and will accept new members for the spring.
