Thorold Secondary School celebrates its exemplary athletes

'We’re hoping that the other students see that hard work pays off'

Last week, Thorold Secondary School held a special assembly to celebrate the achievements of its student-athletes.

Throughout the year, these students showcased the true spirit of sportsmanship, pushed the boundaries of their abilities and inspired others with their passion and commitment.

"They exemplify what it means to be a good teammate,” says the school’s program leader Duane Kemp. "They’re usually our best players and the hardest workers. They’re just good overall people that we’re proud of and obviously they’re excellent athletes as well."

To decide who will get the awards every year, the coaches of the school hold a special meeting.

"We sit down and we discuss what accomplishments students have achieved and all the different aspects of it," Kemp says. "It’s not necessarily all on-field or statistics. We’re looking for good all-around athletes that are good teammates."

Kemp says that recognizing the students is important because they serve as great role models for their peers.

"We’re hoping that the other students see that hard work pays off," he says. "Being a good teammate does pay off, and you’re going to be recognized for that."
