The Niagara River Lions want to help improve the playing experience at outdoor basketball courts around the region.

During their “mesh refresh” initiative this week, members of the Canadian professional basketball team will help install or replace mesh basketball netting on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Our team is excited to re-launch this initiative for the second summer in a row,” said Michelle Biskup, the River Lions’ vice president of operations, in a news release.

“Replacing or adding a mesh on a basketball rim is such a small task, yet it makes a big difference.”

Parks and Recreation Departments throughout the region helped identify which parks will be getting the new Spalding meshes. South Confederation Park and Beaverdams Village Park are on the list.

Thorold residents are invited to come out and join the players on Wednesday at these approximate times:

  • 1:00pm - South Confederation Park - 159 Confederation Avenue
  • 1:45pm - Village of Beaverdams Village Park - Kaye Ave

“Partnerships like this play a crucial role in strengthening and enhancing our community,” added Mayor Terry Ugulini. “We hope to inspire our youth and residents of all ages to show off their basketball skills and help break in the new nets!”

The players will be in St. Catharines Thursday:

  • 2:00pm - Barley Drive Park - 10 Barley Dr
  • 2:30pm - Glengarry Park - 63 Glengarry Rd
  • 3:00pm - Partridge Park - 22 Rockcliffe Rd
