On Friday, local MPP Jeff Burch met with the team of Niagara Cricket Club at the Niagara Cricket Center to hear more about the $36,300 Capital grant awarded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The grant was used to purchase a Mobile Batting Cage and much needed mowing and maintenance equipment. The project was completed in July and will give cricket players in the Niagara Cricket Club, its teams and visiting teams in the district cricket league access to turf pitches.

“It’s my pleasure to congratulate the Niagara Cricket Club on obtaining this Trillium grant for the purchase of field maintenance equipment and a batting cage for practice,” said Niagara Centre MPP Jeff Burch. “These additions will help the club keep this centuries-old game going strong here in Niagara.”

Niagara Cricket Centre, now considered one of the best cricket facilities in the province, is used by local Niagara based teams for their day and night games throughout the spring, summer and fall months. And thanks to the $36,300 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, all players from across the greater Niagara Region will be able to make use and have access to the Mobile batting cages. The volunteers who work hard to maintain the NCC grounds and outfield will have better equipment to mow and maintain the sports grounds.

“The impact of this Ontario Trillium Foundation grant cannot be overstated,” said Tan Qureshi, member of the NCC club board. “This grant has allowed our players, both adult and juniors to use mobile cages to practice on the natural turf pitches. Our sports fields could now be maintained with the new Kubota Mower/Tractor and retrofit of the old pitch will serve for years to come. NCC grounds and facilities are completely open to use by NCC members and by all teams across Niagara Region competing in local district cricket league. We also want to congratulate the Ontario Trillium Foundation on 40 years of granting and building healthy and vibrant communities across the province.”

The Niagara Cricket Centre grounds and facilities are committed to preserving this space and ensuring that it gets maintained to the local club and league’s high standards.
